1st Prenatal Appointment

I had my first appointment this morning with the midwife. The practice has four midwives and they encourage you to see all throughout the pregnancy as one of them is on call when you go into labor. This is much like my experience with the OBs, however THAT is the ONLY similarity.

I waited less than 5 minutes and was taken back right at my appointment time. The midwife emphasized the shorter wait times, longer appointments with her, and a general sense of attention being on me, her patient, as the utmost priority. Obviously, I know this to be true for most midwives, but there are some out there who practice along a more medical, OB-type model and I am so relieve to say that these midwives are going to be awesome!

This first appointment was simply a time for us to take, get to know each other, ask questions, to a pap and quick pelvic exam and attempt to hear a heart beat. My little bean is so tiny and swimming around in there so quickly right now that we were unable to catch one. That does not mean anything is wrong, though, just too early to tell. :)

Our conversation was great. I told her right off that I chose the midwives because I want to be one myself and I want the experience of a midwife-attended pregnancy and birth.  She was so intrigued by my interest; we instantly had something in common.

The rest of the appointment went well and I spent 30 whole minutes with her!! This is unheard of with an OB unless there is a problem. I also loved how she actually said, "we don't like putting things in your vagina that don't belong there", like a trans vaginal ultrasound! While I would have loved to have seen the bean on the screen, I am so glad and at peace by how low intervention these folks are. If I had asked for the ultrasound, that would have sent a mixed message to the midwife and simply been selfish of me. My first appointment with the OB last time was JUST with the TV ultrasound. We loved seeing a blob on the screen, but the differences in practice are so obvious. I am so proud of be going into this profession and even more excited to have a real, midwife experience. Remember, if you want to follow my journey into midwifery you can follow my other blog, Midwife101.

Sharing Birth Stories

Hi friends! I have been working on my Midwife 101 blog and I want to feature a birth story each week! It doesn't matter HOW you birthed your baby. I just want to find new ways to reach out to each other in this blogging community and share one of my most favorite things about pregnancy: the birth. Births are never perfect or the way we want or intended them to happen. But they shape and move us into motherhood in a way nothing else in life does. Send me a comment or email if you're interested!

Superfast Jellyfish

I'm in LOVE with The Gorillaz Planet Beach album and as the title suggests, this is just a superfast update in bullets.

  • Logan is sick again. Make that FIVE times since May.

  • He weighs 22.6 pounds (10th%) and is 34" (80%) tall!

  • I love my job. It's wonderful and only when Logan has been up all night and I've been visiting with an old college friend do I have a hard time coming in.

  • I have been updating my Midwife 101 blog 2-3 times a week now. I just posted a book review. Check it out.

  • I'm bummed that the photo I entered last week was not even a honerable mention. THOSE EYES. Wow...bummed.

  • My bestie bought me The Help for my kindle and so far I am loving it.

  • I am looking forward to: having all of next weekend off, labor day weekend (sun, mon) off, the Hanson concert on Sept 17th, and fallish weather.

Go take a peek

I have another side project blog, Midwife 101, and wrote up a post on WHY I want to become a midwife. If you're interested, take a peek. It's rather long and I love you for reading the entire thing. :)

about that shotty internet

It's still shotty. That being the main reason my writing has really lagged lately and honestly I am so missing meaningful posts! I am even having a hard time catching up on all of yours. I want to thank Randalin AGAIN for writing such a wonderful post. I hope to have her write for us again! Her blog and little man are just so yummy (ha! no pun intended). In the mean time if you'd like even more to read I have started another blog dedicated to all things childbirth/midwife. It is not for the fait of heart, people. So if you get a little squeamish about female-ish things or just don't care to read about those subjects then no hard feelings. For the most part, I am using it as a way to keep track of things I want to remember (much like a personal blog). But I also know there are others out there like myself who devour this subject matter. I LOVE IT! Please, if you know of anyone who might enjoy it, share and enjoy!
